It is my experience that an awful lot of anarchists have cats. I, with two cats as well as a dog, am one of them. It is also my experience that a considerable amount of anarchists are vegetarians or vegans. I am not one of them.
In the short term, this is of no consequence. The main anarchist centre in Liverpool is a vegan space, but I never feel excluded from there. The place has a lively, welcoming atmosphere, and many people who are not vegans go there without feeling excluded. After all, if I want to eat something which contains meat, I can quite easily go somewhere else.
But what of the longer term?
There seems to be little crossover between “veganarchism” and class-struggle anarchist communism. For the working class, daily contending with the realities of life under capitalism, animal liberation can appear the pursuit of…

Call your Congressmen today and tell them YOU want USFWS and Sheldon National Wildlife Refuge held accountable for every wild horse and burro they removed from the range in the last two years. http://www.opencongress.org/people/zipcodelookup Tell them your “vote depends on it.”
We have written so much about the Sheldon Mustangs (just type Sheldon in the search bar) trying to inform you of the issues present at the refuge. We talked about the plans made to remove all horses and burros that started to be created five years ago (Sheldon is NOT a drought removal or a “for the good of the horses,” but simply because they do not fit in with what Sheldon says in their mission). We have tried repeatedly to get folks to recognize that Sheldon is not BLM but is managed by USFWS… but still under the Department of Interior. The history of Sheldon horses as “war horses” is well documented and we shared that with you. We have shown you the horses and told you where you could get one. We talked about our litigation (and there is more info on that to share later as more…

“Friend to Equines Sacked by News Network”
Her program, which aired for six years at 7 p.m. Eastern on the CNN sister network, ended Monday. Mitchell was told of the layoff on Tuesday, said an executive at CNN who requested anonymity because the person was not authorized to discuss personnel matters. Twelve people, including Mitchell, were let go with this cut.
The show will be replaced temporarily by reruns of “Forensic Files.”
CNN Worldwide is in the midst of an 8 percent staff cut, a total of 300 jobs. An estimated 130 people have taken buyouts, with layoffs accounting for the remainder, the executive said Wednesday.
HLN’s future has been a subject of speculation recently, after CNN negotiated but failed to reach a deal…

“We all want a chance to live. Not a few of us, all of us. Stop enabling those who kill. Help us.”
Our battle for a No Kill nation is not against the public. It is against the cowards of our movement who refuse to stand up to their colleagues and friends running shelters that are mired in the failed and defunct philosophies that allow (indeed, cause) killing. Our battle is against those who claim to be part of our movement but fail to recognize the killing of millions of animals every year as an unnecessary and cruel slaughter and to call it what it is. It is against those who will not do for the animals that thing which is their solemn duty to do: to change themselves and to demand that their colleagues change, when that is what the situation calls for. – Nathan Winograd
Rescuers who pull animals from a shelter in order to save them while remaining silent about the needless killing of healthy/treatable pets there are enabling…

Gimmie Shelter- but look up the definition first!
The Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals in the UK reportedly killed 53,000 animals in 2011, many of them healthy or treatable. The RSPCA’s 44% kill rate can not be blamed on an open admission status:
In 2009, the RSPCA, which is one of Britain’s biggest charities and receives £120 million a year in donations, stopped accepting stray animals and unwanted pets.
While the number of animals being adopted to new homes by the RSPCA has fallen, the number of convictions against pet owners has risen by 20%. Critics claim that the organization’s focus on securing convictions has led to the drop in animals being adopted out as well as thug tactics against pet owners:
[In 2011], spinster Georgina Langley, 67, of West Hougham, Kent, was raided at her home by the RSPCA and had five of her 13 cats put down.
The charity prosecuted her for neglect, but Mr Smith…

Earlier this week, an observer at Calgary airport sent us photos of pallets of horsemeat destined for Europe.
Horses slaughtered at the Bouvry Exports plant in Fort MacLeod the week of January 6th, have been packed into nice, tidy little boxes ready for gourmands in Europe.
Note that the boxes have an image of a horse in front of boxes.
Cargolux Cargo Airlines, based in Belgium, is frequently used by Bouvry Exports for shipping horsemeat to Europe. On Sunday, January 12, 2014, a Cargolux flight arrived in Calgary to pick up a shipment of horsemeat going to Europe.
The screen shot below shows the Cargolux flight’s routing from Los Angeles to Calgary.
The image below shows pallets of horsemeat on the ramp at Calgary. In the background, the shed where live draft horses are “packed” for their final journey to Japan. Please click here to see a…

Please share this post and help anyway you can. This is CRIMINAL!!!
Image from the header of the Gloucester Co AC webpage. The header.
A compassionate person in Gloucester Co, NJ has been feeding community cats on her own property for years. Sandra Leady has caught many of the cats and had them vaccinated and neutered at her own expense, since the Gloucester Co pound doesn’t do anything for free living cats except kill them. There are an estimated 18 cats in the colony she’s feeding today. But a cat hating neighbor recently called animal control to report her and the AC director used Ms. Leady’s kind acts against her:
The medical care she provided made her legally responsible for the animals, according to Gloucester County Animal Shelter Director Bill Lombardi.
After a warning notice from the animal control office, Leady has few options: Build a pen for the feral felines or let the county set cat traps in her yard.

The Humane Society of the New Braunfels Area in Texas hides many of the animals impounded by the facility. When a citizen contacted the organization in July expressing concern over this practice, Amanda Craig, president of the HS of the New Braunfels Area, responded with an explanation. This is a portion of that response:
I have to assume, due to the content of your email, that your knowledge and opinion of our shelter have been influenced by the No Kill New Braunfels group. I would like to take this opportunity to clarify a few things and invite you to be a part of our future success.
The only animals that are not photographed are the stray animals that are still on hold, animals who enter the shelter in such poor medical condition that they cannot be treated, animals that enter the shelter that are too aggressive for adoption and feral…

Wild West Welfare
“The western cattle industry has been riding the backs of taxpayers for nearly seventy years”
–T.H. Watkins, 2002
Few have profited more or longer off of American taxpayers than livestock operators who graze the public lands of the American West. Tens of thousands of square miles there have, for more than three quarters of a century, been managed essentially as grazing estates for a small minority of “permittees” – individuals or corporations holding federal grazing permits.
The scheme dates back to the Taylor Grazing Act of 1934 when the U.S. Bureau of Land Management (BLM, known at the time as the Grazing Service) placed millions of acres into “grazing allotments”. Over ensuing generations politics…

Norfolk Whistleblower Alleges Pound in Violation of State Law, Retains Attorney to Fight Termination
The city of Norfolk, VA kills animals at its pound. So far in 2014, more than 1600 animals have been killed. Nearly 600 of those animals were killed because the staff at the Norfolk pound didn’t like their behavior in addition to the 230 animals who were killed for being feral. Fifty-four animals were killed for being too old while another 125 were killed for being too young. Five animals were killed for being pregnant, which means their unborn offspring were suffocated inside their mothers but Norfolk doesn’t bother counting them.
The Norfolk pound currently has 8 dogs listed for adoption on its website. They’re doing the best they can, totally.
A former Norfolk pound employee who says she was fired for being a whistleblower has retained an attorney to fight the city’s termination of her employment:
Adrienne Alper, 26, worked for the city-run shelter for about seven months before…
